What is Taliban?
Taliban means students in Pashto language. The Taliban is a Sunni Islamist movement that originated in Afghanistan in 1994. The Taliban was born in a madrassa in northern Pakistan that taught a radical form of Sunni Islam. Initially, the Taliban were favored by the people because the Taliban had promised that they would end corruption and anarchy. But their violent and cruel punishments under Islamic law spread terror among the public. The Taliban captured Herat in 1995 and Kabul in 1996. The Taliban, recognized only by Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, are held responsible for Afghanistan’s deteriorating home situation. By 1998, almost all of Afghanistan was occupied by the Taliban.
Founder of Taliban
The founder and original leader of the Taliban was Mullah Mohammad Omar, who died in 2013, but this was officially confirmed by his son in 2015. Mullah Akhter Mansour, the top official of Mullak, the founder of the Taliban, was killed in a 2016 drone strike. Since then, Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada has been the commander of the Taliban. Umar’s son Mullah Mohammad Yakub is also with Haibatullah. Apart from this, the co-founder of the Taliban, Mullat Abdul Ghani Baradar and the head of the Hakka Ni network, Sirajuddin Hakkasani, are also part of the Taliban.
Taliban ideology
In the beginning, the Taliban was much liked by the people because the Taliban had promised that it would end corruption and anarchy, but people troubled by the Taliban’s violent attitude and brutal punishments started opposing the Taliban. Music, TV and cinema were banned. Men had to bear beards, during the last five years of Taliban rule, strict Sharia law was in force in Afghanistan, women were mainly barred from studies, without men (brothers/fathers) women leaving their homes. But there was strict prohibition, cultural artefacts viewed as blasphemy under Islam were destroyed, public executions and flogging became common, Western films and books were banned.
International recognition of Taliban
While only four countries had given international recognition to the Taliban while in power, other countries like China have given indications of recognizing the Taliban as a legitimate regime in the current scenario.
